Art Basel and its Takeover

Raphael Santos & Eliana

Project Description

Art Basel is a once a year event that made its way to Miami back in 2002. Since its inaguration, Miami Beach has exploded into the art world, with an ever increasing event list and lineup. Art Basel started with a large group of artists from the Art Basel in Basel, Switzerland coming to display artworks at the Miami Convention Center on Miami Beach. Miami Beach took opportunity of this inflow of artistic and cultural minds coming once a year. New venues have appeared alongside the Miami Beach Convention Ceneter, but some have made its roots among Wynwood Art DIstrict. In the past three years, Wynwood has housed some Art Basel related events in the month of December, and has shown itself to be another site for Art Basel culture. Like a spider web, Art Basel has crept its way onto Miami, but has somehow managed to miss Downtown Miami Beach, why?

Conclusions

  • Downtown is not culturally active

  • There are "hotspots" that house a lot of artworks and sculptures like Bayfront Park

  • Galleries are scarce downtown

  • Downtown has transport sufficient for activities

  • Most Importantly, Downtown is not cohesive enough to introduce a new layer of identity.
